The aim of the design studio is to consider the Sears Tower as a city.
Disciplinary context
The Sears Tower or Willis Tower in Chicago can be considered as an autonomous as well as an heteronomous object. The High-rise is autonomous in the sense that it is a freestanding tower disconnected from its immediate urban context. It is a modernist building surrounded by a void space. But if be look at the Sears Tower not as a building but as a model of a city, we can argue that the Sears Tower is an assemblage of buildings or as Kaufman would say, a baroque ensemble. If we look to the part to whole relationship of the Sears Tower with structural eyes (Stranded Sears Tower, Greg Lynn), then we can understand the whole as a bundle of tube towers standing tied together. If we look to the part to whole relationship from the viewpoint of the theorem of high-rise buildings as an repetition of grounds (Rem Koolhaas, Downtown athletic club) then we can identify a stacking of buildings with various ground repetitions: from a 9 square grid building, to 7 square grid building to 5 square grid buildings to 2 square grid buildings. If we look to the whole from a infrastructural perspective, whereby the whole building is understood as the stacking of elevators with the lobbies on the 33/34, 66/67, 89/90 floor lobbies as transfer points, then the Sear Tower can be understood as an aggregate of mini buildings with the sky lobbies containing their entrances.
However we look at the Sears Tower as a model for a city, it describes a baroque ensemble, in which every individual part scarifies its identity to a larger whole.
The aim of the studio is to disassemble the Sears Tower and reassemble it into a new whole. A whole that defined an aggregated figure, in which every individual building performs as the ground for the next one and appears as being autonomous and as well as heteronomous at the same time.
The result of the sears tower will be presented by a model and by drawings in the scale of 1:200.
