Augmented Utopias

The course frames part of the current discourse on the disciplinary impact of digital architecture. After 30 years of digital architecture there is still many possibilities for original design but we have to be aware of the long baggage on the discipline and keep an critic attitude to avoid falling in the usual formal answers. Ioud has a genealogy of E4 studios where new technological evolution have been always used to question disciplinary problems. In the last 3 years the studio has been focusing on the possibilities of design by fusing different elements until they lose their form and content.

Context

The technological apparatus plays an important role nowadays. One could argue that the same software produce similar results. That can be true but only in a very superficial understanding of the matter. The goal of the studio is to push students into a level of expertise where formal approaches are not dictated by the media. We need to be able to manipulate our medium specificity; only in that way we will produce novel tectonics.

Media can produce many provocations flirting with the border between real and realism. Images can be tweaked until they produce uncertain possible scenarios. Our studio won't be about the virtuosity of replicating reality but more about the questions that this speculations can trigger

Topic

The 20th century was very fertile in ideas about futuristic cities. Many of them are tilted today as "Utopias" and these definition sometimes project bad connotation. Utopia come from the greek term οὐ ("not") and τόπος ("place") and means "no-place". It was quoted for Sir Thomas Moro for his 1516 book Utopia, describing a fictional scenarios. This adjetive was used to describe all futuristic proposals in the 20 century propably because they were not convincing or they couldn't prove the feasibility of them. Nowadays we have means to take these ideas into the next level of realism.

Methodology

Each group will have to research one utopian proposal and develop it further. They will have to play in the fringe between utopian and real. One way of achieve this goal is by loading scenarios with data. If a situation is overloaded with information, then it must be true. (E.g. Aditnálta island).
Students will be equipped with the techniques they need in order to achieved high quality results. Rendering techniques as well as Augmented reality will be taught in the studio.

Outcome

In the first semester, students will develop one specific utopian city given to each group.
Second semester, these ideas will be taken into a specific site and they will develop their own augmented utopias.
