environments The theme of this semester's master design studio is closely linked with the Lecture series that Studio1 is organizing starting next week (Florian Hertwick/ Green Archipelago) through April/May (Walter Niedermaier, Gion Caminada) to the beginning of June (Junya Ishigami, Marie Jager, Jane Rendell). The notion of environment encompasses a broad spectrum of discussions from different view points. It spans from an ecological scale and focus to systems of relations in cultural production and social exchange. It describes spaces we experience, we engage with, we shape with our actions. Environments are hybrids of phenomena, materials, perceptions, generating the dynamic and specificity of any situation, where mood and drift, ambience and logics play out their permutations. This upcoming series of events brings together distinct positions from architecture, art and critical theory, with the aim of developing new agendas at the intersection of disciplines. Within the framework of the studio project, environments are to be understood in a wider sense as what surrounds us at various scales, in different contexts, in different systems of relations. Therefore, it does not exclusively sit within an ecological sphere: it is as much the ambient in which we work and live, as a physical space, as the intellectual or cultural scene that we engage.
On the basis of some seminal texts by various authors, the design studio will explore diverse notions of environments and identify those geographies, elements and procedures that define them. Stage 1 (14.03. - 10.04.) Questions - reading texts, writing a critical appraisal as a summary (500 words), discussion of different aspects of these texts. - a physical model of the text (reference) - a diagram about the text (reference) Texts: Jane Rendell - Art's Use of Architecture Junya Ishigami - Small Images / Arch+ interview Sumrell & Varnelis / AUDC - Blue Monday / Ether: One Wilshire and Swarm Intelligence - Quartzsite, Arizona Presentation Stage 1 (11.04.) Short presentation of the first results, working with the techniques above. Stage 2 (12.04. - 22.05) Methodology Parameters generated within the analysis (Stage 1) will be used to produce a specific environment. The employed techniques should focus on developing a clear understanding of the conceptual, representational and communicative potential of such typical tools as sketching, drawing and model making (physical and digital). Presentation Stage 2 (23.05.) mid-term presentation Stage 3 (24.05. - 26.05. Translation Taking the results into a new medium for the final presentation.  (e.g. Christophe Girot's "Blicklandschaften", ETHZ) Stage 3 (27.05.) Final presentation
Anwesenheit (10%) Referate und individuelle Aufgaben (20%) Zwischenpräsentation (30%) Endpräsentation (40%)
A list will be given in the first meeting
