Students develop basic competences for the application of qualitative methods for data collection, data processing and data analysis in educational science.

The involvement in on-going research projects provides for practical learning and the application of research skills in reality. In general, the research centre Generation - Education - Lifecourse serves as a point of reference; students conduct small research tasks and produce respective research reports. In particular, the seminar addresses non-formal and informal education and learning activities of young people and adults, in particular related to the topic of democratic citizenship: which educational approaches, designs, settings, methodologies and methods are applied in the practice of out-of-school youth and adult education, and what are their effects?

Following an introduction into on-going research projects of the lecturer (inputs, reading, discussion), research tasks within such a research project are taken over by students/working groups; reflection in group discussions as well as regular reporting are an on-going feature. Furthermore, an introduction to qualitative methods of social research takes place through respective literature and short presentations.

Active and continuous participation of students (with attendance list) in the context of planning, implementing and reporting (verbal and in writing) with respect to the research tasks related to the on-going research projects of the lecturer. Short presentations on research methods. Research reports produced by working groups; documentation of and written reflection on the research activities.

Relevant reports on the research project and background literature as well as literature on research methods will be made available at the beginning and during the seminar. It needs to be noted that part of the literature and of the project reports will be in English.
