IMMEDIATE EXPOSURE – a pavilion for the world exposition 2020

Immediacy: the quality of bringing one into direct and instant involvement with something, giving rise to a sense of urgency or excitement

Exposure: the state of having no protection from something harmful, the revelation of something secret, especially something embarrassing or damaging, the direction in which a building faces; an outlook

Task: This term we will be designing the Austrian pavilion for the world exposition 2020 in Dubai. Students will develop their own individual strategies for a pavilion design and concepts for its exhibition and agenda. World expositions consist of mostly temporary structures, which strangely are constructed as if they were permanent. They provide static and impermeable enclosures in order to conceal an interior experience from outside disturbance. They are national monuments which are later disassembled to waste material. The architects of the Expo 2015 masterplan for Milano tried to follow a different concept of a more responsible and temporary way of construction. Thus, in the end the expo site turned out as a collection of “representational” objects again.

We will redefine the expo pavilion – not as a building or permanent structure – but as a process of assembly and recycling. We will rethink the exhibition as a permeable space which is exposed to its exterior in order to define a entangled relationship between content and material structure. We will create resilient pavilions which make use of the material Dubai has plenty of – sand. The granular, the pointillist, the particular will become our point of departure to develop strategies of bonding and spontaneous formations.

Our pavilions will not exhibit a theme – they will expose themselves and their material processes. They will not determine any meaning but let many evolve when interacting with visitors. Instead of creating symbolic or iconic landmarks we will think of structures and spaces of immediate presence and sensational experiences.
