The architectural drawing is essentially the definition of abstraction in architecture. It is the common ground of the discipline built on established conventions on our medium specificity. A graphic language of icons, symbols and notations which only can be understood through the specific knowledge on this matter.

In this coded language abstraction becomes the result of the tension between reality and its representation, a method to defamiliarize form that will privilege the reality of the medium. Here, abstraction becomes an extension of realism, not its antithetical position. For Jacques Rancière’s*, Abstraction is not “the abandonment of figuration, but the conquest of the surface".

Students will work in groups and the seminar will be divided in two parts:

Abstraction as a tool to strange realism. Through history of architecture it has been many examples where drawings have been manipulated to serve more complex purpose of mediation. After a theoretical introduction of the most influential drawings in architecture, students will need to produce an extensive research on one of them.

Virtual drawings. The past three decades have seen a shift in the technologies of design mediation, producing a different set of representational problems for architecture. The discourse surrounding Speculative Realism offers a way in which these issues can be engaged in a provocative manner. Students will be introduced to computational techniques to produce simulation using those canonical drawings as study case. Virtual won't be  only the quality of being simulated on a computer, rather a conceptual understanding of the state of becoming.

"If the Virtual House is not completely specified by fixed qualities, it is because it is a dynamic space prior to any qualifications, so smooth that fixed qualities do not stick to it, are always slipping off it. Its geometry is not drawn from fixed points. The virtual looks like nothing that we already know or see"      John Rajchman
