Am Ende des Kurses werden die Studenten in der Lage sein, die wichtigsten Methoden und Techniken der englischen Kommunikation im Umfeld der Wirtschaft zu beherrschen. Im Detail umfasst der Kurs vor allem die folgenden Fertigkeiten: • Goal Setting • Making Business Small Talk • Expressing Probability • Effective Questions • Dealing with Difficult Questions • Expressing Dis/Agreement • Telephoning and Active Listening • Presentation skills Der wirtschaftliche Kontext umfasst Grundzüge der Volkswirtschaft und die interne sowie externe Strukturierung von Firmen. Goals: The main goal of the course is to help the students learn to communicate effectively in business situations where English is the lingua franca. The emphasis is on effectiveness, fluency and accuracy. In-class training is designed to provide them with ample opportunity to acquire a general knowledge of business language and practises, economic terminology, communication and social skills, and to apply them in both speaking and writing. Students will also set their own personal goals for the semester and regularly assess their progress. Die oben genannten Fähigkeiten und Inhalte werden mittels Simulationen, Einzel, Paar-und Gruppenarbeiten und Fallbeispielen intensiv trainiert. Methods: The skills above will be trained by means of simulations, pair and group work, and case studies.

Leistungsüberprüfung: Die ständige Mitarbeit der StudentInnen sowie mehrere kürzere schriftliche Arbeiten werden zur Beurteilung der Leistungserbringung herangezogen. Zu Semesterende findet eine mündliche Prüfung in Kleingruppen statt. Außerdem müssen die TeilnehmerInnen ein „Lesetagebuch“ führen. Es besteht Anwesenheitspflicht. Evaluation: The students’ ongoing participation in class as well as several short written assignments will be used to assess the students’ performance. There will also be a final oral exam at the end of the semester, done in groups. Additionally, students will be asked to keep a record of their reading progress, the so called reading journal. Regular attendance is mandatory.

Begleitend zur Lehrveranstaltung wird das Skriptum "ACE - Active Communication in English" und das dazugehörige Lese-Skriptum "Background Readings in Business" verwendet. Beide Skripten werden zu Kursbeginn verteilt. Literature: Two course manuals will be used: “ACE – Active Communication in English” and the reading manual "Background Readings in Business". Both will be distributed in class at the beginning of the semester.
