Students should be informed about the full importance of two classical texts of world literature, their form, dimensions, and reception in literature and film from the 18th century to the present and be able to transfer their compentences to other texts.

Discussion of Robinson Crusoe and Gulliver's Travels, their publication, form, ideology, critical and creative reception from the 18th century to the present, including recent film versions. Specific emphasis will be put on the (post)colonial and intercultural dimensions of the texts.

Discussion of texts, film versions, presentations

Presentation (20 - 30 mins) in the first block, presentation of the work done for the seminar paper in the second block, written seminar paper to be handed in at the end of the semester

Basic texts: Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe, Norton Critical Edition and Jonathan Swift, Gulliver's Travels, Norton Critical Edition (we all need the same editions, inexpensive e.g. at amazon.de). Other important texts and films  for our discussions will be supplied (esp. the recent film adaptation of R.C. with Pierce Brosnan and the award-winning TV mini-series of G.'s T.)

 Unbedingt erforderlich ist die Teilnahme an der ersten Session am 17. Oktober, weil hier wichtige Informationen gegeben und Referatsthemen für den ersten Block bsprochen und vergeben werden.
