The goal of the lecture will be for students to learn to value the various novels as reflecting the historical, cultural, and political issues of their time, to understand the development of various writing techniques, as well as to appreciate the birth and triumph of novels produced by writers of ethnic backgrounds.

The lecture offers a survery of the development of the American novel in the 20th century. It is based on the lecture about the American novel from the beginnings to the end of the 19th century, but it is no prerequisite to have attended that lecture. The focus in the survey of 20th-century American novels will be on the cultural contexts they reflect as well as on the development of novels produced by ethnic writers in the second half of the century. The reading of approx. 10 novels will be required.
