To gain a critical overview of directions and movements in 19th.c. British Art; to relate such movements to socio-political and cultural change; to develop methodological procedures for handling such art; ... ;

How can we learn to look at and interpret 19th.c. British art critically? How did artists and society grapple with the problem of modernity? From topographical landscape to the 'Sublime', from watercolour to oils: we cover movements and individual artworks within their social and historical context. We explore classical influences and

Four introductory input and workshop sessions, followed by individual or paired presentations of negotiated topics. Round-up session where we bring the various strands together.

Initial workshop assignments + Presentation + follow-up paper (strictly, two weeks later). Regular attendance, with active oral participation. Dossier and letter of critical self-reflection.

Wide-ranging exhibition of books and monographs on artists offered during opening 4 sessions.
